Mountain gorilla trekking is a unique wildlife experience that allows visitors to observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. In Uganda, this activity is most famously conducted in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a dense tropical rainforest known for its rich biodiversity and rugged terrain.
The trek begins early in the morning with a briefing from park rangers, who explain safety guidelines and gorilla conservation rules. Visitors are then guided through thick vegetation, steep hills, and muddy trails in search of a habituated gorilla family.

The duration of the trek varies, ranging from one to several hours depending on the gorillas’ movements. Once located, trekkers are allowed to spend one hour observing the gorillas from a safe distance, watching them feed, groom, and interact socially. Strict regulations, enforced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, ensure minimal disturbance to the animals and protect them from disease transmission.
